When you participate in 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM), your blood pressure is monitored throughout the day as you go about your regular activities. It employs a tiny digital blood pressure monitor that is fastened to a cuff around your upper arm and a belt around your body. Because of its modest size, you can sleep with it and carry on with your regular activities.
Why ABPM Test is performed?
ABPM is an effective diagnostic and treatment tool for a number of conditions:
- “White-coat” hypertension: When BP measurements are high in the doctor’s office but falls within the normal range when taken at home.
- Resistant hypertension: When several antihypertensive drugs are unable to effectively manage high blood pressure, this is known as resistant hypertension.
- Masked hypertension: When the mean blood pressure is higher than what is considered acceptable yet in-office measures are within that range.
- Hypotensive symptoms: When the patients experiences symptoms such as giddiness due to over-lowering of BP with hypertensive medications
- Nocturnal hypertension: When daytime BP measurements are in the ideal range but in the sub-optimal range at night.
How is the ABPM Test is performed?
- Our technician will fit a BP cuff on your left or right arm and a small BP machine will be worn on a belt on your waist.
- Your blood pressure will be taken by the machine at regular intervals of 30 minutes throughout the day and 1 hour at night. The machine can be placed on the bed or beneath a pillow while you sleep, but it will need to be kept on all night.
- Our technician will download the blood pressure readings for analysis and take out the machine and cuff at the end of the 24-hour period.
- Your entire BP recording will be reviewed by our doctor and a summarized report of your BP control will be provided. Fixing of cuff and machine takes 5-10 minutes.
How do I get ready for the ABPM Test?
- Before attending the test, take a bath because you will be required to wear the tiny digital blood pressure monitor for a full day.
- To make it easier to set the blood pressure monitor, wear a shirt that is easy to take off and shorts or pants with belt loops. Make sure you have a belt so you may wear it around your waist.
- As directed by our doctor, continue taking your prescribed drugs, if any.
- A summary of your blood pressure control will be given by our physician after he has reviewed your entire blood pressure recording.
