Why the EMG Test is Performed ?

A doctor may order an EMG test if a person has symptoms of a muscle or nerve condition.

Such symptoms may include:

• persistent pain in the feet, legs, arms, or hands
• muscle weakness
• Muscle pain or cramping
• Certain types of limb pain
• numbness, tingling, or paralysis in the limbs

How does an EMG Test Performed?

• You will be asked to sit or lie down on a bed or table, for the test.
• Your provider will clean the skin over the muscle being tested.
• Technician will place a needle electrode into the muscle. A needle electrode is a special wire that a mild electric current flows through. You may have slight pain or discomfort when the electrode is inserted.
• The needles detect the electrical activity of muscles at rest and while contracted.
• The needle electrodes transmit this information to a device called an oscilloscope, which displays electrical signals as waves.
• Once the test is finished, the technician will remove the needles.

How do I get ready for the EMG test?

• Take a shower or bathe, to remove excess oil from the skin.
• wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes.
• Avoid applying cream, lotions or body oils on your skin on the day of the test.
• Fasting is not required before the test. But. Don’t take heavy meal.
• Avoid, smoke cigarettes, tobacco, caffeine or drink two to three hours before testing.
• Notify the neurologist or technician, if you take any over the counter or prescription medications, especially blood thinners.
• Notify your technician if you have a cardiac defibrillator or pacemaker.
